1/20/2024 0 Comments Doom 3 vs system shock 2 redditThe flashlight you see in other action/horror games has more in common with something like Silent Hill. Even BFG edition walked it back and the duct-tape mod has existed for forever. I find it hard to believe you'd credit Doom 3 as influential to FEAR given the proximity of their release dates, and the Dead Space mention ignores that the game is pretty much Resident Evil 4 meets System Shock 2.Īction Horror with a Flashlight (AHwaF) isn't a genre, and no game to my knowledge has ever replicated the flashlight from Doom 3 precisely because it sucks. FEAR came out a year later and managed to have vastly better shooting, level design, encounters, and AI while retaining a similarly oppressive atmosphere and actually using tech to benefit the moment to moment gameplay. It's a cool proof of concept but ambition doesn't make something good. Saying it has the classic gameplay isn't even true, it's slow as fuck, relies on 99% of encounters being bullshit GOTCHA moments and monster closets (which were definitely present in older Doom games but nowhere near as prevalent), shooting feels like trash, and the level design's homogeneous nature makes the experience a complete slog. Yeah, that stuff is all really cool but the game plays significantly worse than Doom 1, 2 or 2016 and no amount of tech mastery can change that.
